Do You Need an EIN for Your YouTube Channel? (2026)

Most solo YouTubers don't need an EIN, but a few things change that. A yes/no table, what AdSense accepts on the W-9, and the IRS online steps.

The AdSense tax screen asks for a tax ID, a sponsor’s agency sends a W-9, and suddenly every forum thread says you need an EIN. If you run the channel alone as a sole proprietor with no employees, you don’t: the IRS’s own test doesn’t require one, and Google accepts your Social Security number on the W-9. Below is a yes/no table for the situations that do change the answer, what Google actually checks on the tax form, and the ten-minute IRS application if you decide to get one anyway.

This is general information, not licensed tax or legal advice. I built a YouTube channel past 130,000 subscribers as a one-person operation and worked in finance before that, but I’m not licensed to advise on your return. Every rule here links to its source, mostly IRS.gov and Google’s own help pages.

The short answer, using the IRS’s own test

The IRS publishes a six-question test. You need an EIN if you have employees or operate as a corporation or partnership. The same goes if you file employment, excise, or alcohol, tobacco and firearms returns, withhold tax on non-wage income paid to a non-resident alien, or have a Keogh plan. The last question covers trusts, estates, nonprofits and a few other organization types. A yes to any one of them means apply.

A solo creator earning AdSense, sponsorships and affiliate commissions answers no to all six. That is the whole answer for most channels.

The Schedule C instructions say the same thing from the filing side: you need an EIN only if you have a qualified retirement plan or must file employment, excise, alcohol, tobacco or firearms returns, or pay gambling winnings. If you don’t have one, you leave line D blank.

Not required is different from not useful. The IRS also says that if you don’t need an EIN for federal tax purposes, you can still request one for banking or state tax purposes. So the real question is whether one of the situations below applies to you.

Yes or no: the situations that change the answer

Each row is drawn from the IRS or Google page named in the last column, read on October 26, 2026.

Your situation EIN required? What the source says
Solo sole proprietor, no employees, ad revenue and sponsors No None of the six IRS questions applies; leave Schedule C line D blank
AdSense / YouTube tax info (Form W-9) No Google asks for a US tax ID and names both SSN and EIN
Sponsor or agency sends you a W-9 No W-9: a sole proprietor with an EIN may enter either the SSN or the EIN
You pay a freelance editor as a contractor No, not by itself The IRS list names employees, not contractors
You hire an employee (editor on payroll) Yes “Do you have employees?” is the first IRS question
Solo 401(k) or other Keogh-type qualified plan Yes Schedule C: an EIN is needed if you have a qualified retirement plan; Form 5500-EZ is filed under the sponsor’s EIN
Single-member LLC, default tax treatment Not for the W-9 The W-9 takes the owner’s SSN, or the owner’s EIN, not the LLC’s
LLC taxed as an S corp, or a multi-member LLC Yes Corporations and partnerships need one; the W-9 takes the entity’s EIN
Business bank account Depends on the bank The IRS allows an EIN for banking purposes even when tax rules don’t require one

The solo 401(k) row is the one creators trip over. It’s a common next step once a channel pays real money, and the IRS’s one-participant plan page says sponsors must file Form 5500-EZ once the plan’s assets, combined with their other one-participant plans, exceed $250,000, using their nine-digit EIN. Since the Schedule C rule ties the EIN to having the plan at all, get the number before you open one. The solo 401(k) vs SEP IRA comparison covers whether that plan is the right one.

The contractor row is also worth a second look. Paying a freelance editor doesn’t put you on the IRS list. If you pay one $2,000 or more in 2026, though, you’ll be the one sending a Form 1099-NEC, and you’ll want their W-9 before the first invoice.

What Google accepts on the AdSense W-9

Google’s AdSense tax page says US individuals and businesses should have a US tax ID and provide it on a valid Form W-9, and it names an Employer Identification Number or Social Security Number as the US tax IDs it means. YouTube’s own tax page tells monetizing creators to check and update their tax info in AdSense for YouTube each year, so this is the form behind the YouTube tax screen.

Leaving it blank is expensive. YouTube’s help page says that for an individual account without valid tax info, backup withholding applies and 24% of total worldwide earnings will be withheld. With valid tax info on file, Google withholds nothing from a US creator. Google also says to submit tax information before the 20th to receive a payment in the same month.

The trap is in the classification, not the number. Google’s TIN verification troubleshooter, written for publishers whose payments are on hold over a name mismatch, says a common issue is publishers selecting “Individual,” entering their personal name, and adding an EIN. Its instruction is to put in your name and classification as they appear on your income tax return.

My read, as someone who spent years running a channel alone and worked in finance before that: the tax screen is a set-it-once form, and the cost of getting it wrong is a payment hold you notice weeks later. If you’re a sole proprietor and have no other reason for an EIN, the SSN is the lowest-friction entry, because it matches how you file. If you do get an EIN and want it on the form, make the name and classification match exactly what the IRS has, and expect a verification step.

Sponsors, W-9s and the case for an EIN anyway

The strongest reason a solo creator gets an EIN isn’t a rule. It’s that every sponsor, agency and affiliate network that pays you will ask for a W-9, and each copy of that form carries your tax ID.

The W-9 lets a sole proprietor choose. Your individual name goes on line 1 as it appears on your Form 1040, any business or channel name goes on line 2, and if you have an EIN you may enter either your SSN or the EIN. Giving the EIN means your Social Security number isn’t sitting in a dozen marketing inboxes.

If a sponsor needs the W-9 today and you’ve applied but don’t have the number yet, the form allows “Applied For” in the TIN space. Without any valid TIN on file, the payer is required to withhold 24% of payments subject to backup withholding.

If you’re signing more than a couple of sponsor deals a year, get the EIN. It costs nothing and takes one sitting. If the channel is AdSense only, it’s optional. Our guide to sponsorship income taxes covers the rest of the paperwork a deal creates.

What changes on your 1099s when you switch

Less than people expect. A sole proprietor’s EIN and SSN both point to the same taxpayer, so switching only changes which number appears on forms going forward.

Here’s what arrives, based on the current IRS and Google pages:

  • YouTube: Google’s YouTube tax page says US creators get Form 1099-MISC, typically issued by early March. AdSense’s year-end form page lists 1099-MISC or 1099-K for US persons.
  • Sponsors and agencies paying you as a contractor: Form 1099-NEC when they pay you $2,000 or more for 2026, up from $600, with inflation adjustments possible from 2027.
  • Royalty-type payments: the 1099-MISC line for royalties is still $10.

The 1099 shows whichever TIN the payer had on your W-9, so after you switch you may get a mix for a year: Google under your SSN, a new sponsor under your EIN. Payers may truncate your number on the copy they send you, but not on the copy filed with the IRS. Both kinds go on the same Schedule C, and the EIN goes on line D. Do not put your SSN there.

The thresholds are only about who files a form. Income below them is still income. The 1099-NEC vs 1099-K guide shows how to avoid reporting the same dollars twice, and how creators pay taxes covers the quarterly side.

If the channel is in an LLC

Forming an LLC is where most people assume the EIN becomes mandatory. For tax ID purposes on the W-9, a default single-member LLC doesn’t change much.

The W-9 says a single-member LLC disregarded as separate from its owner enters the owner’s SSN, or the owner’s EIN if the owner has one. If the LLC is classified as a corporation or partnership, it enters the entity’s EIN. The Schedule C instructions only put an LLC’s own EIN on line D if it was issued for a qualified retirement plan, for employment, excise, alcohol, tobacco or firearms returns, or as a payer of gambling winnings. If your bank wants an EIN for the LLC’s account, the IRS allows one for banking purposes. Whether to form one at all is covered in should you form an LLC for your YouTube channel.

Business bank accounts

Separating channel money from personal money doesn’t require an EIN at every bank. Our comparison of business bank accounts for sole proprietors found several that accept a sole proprietor’s SSN and at least one that asks for an EIN confirmation letter. If the bank you want asks, the IRS explicitly allows an EIN requested for banking purposes.

How to apply online: a checklist with the IRS hours

The application is free on IRS.gov, and the IRS warns about websites that charge for an EIN. Anything asking for a fee is a middleman.

Before you start:

  1. Check the clock. The online tool runs Monday to Friday 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. the next day, Saturday 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday 6 p.m. to midnight, Eastern Time.
  2. Have your SSN or ITIN ready. The tool needs the responsible party’s number, and the business must be based in the US or a US territory.
  3. Block fifteen minutes. You must finish in one session, it can’t be saved, and it expires after 15 minutes of inactivity.
  4. Apply once. The IRS issues only one EIN per responsible party per day.

The choices a solo YouTuber makes on the form, which mirror Form SS-4:

  1. Entity type: sole proprietor. Your individual name goes on the name line, not the channel name; the channel or brand name goes on the trade-name line.
  2. Reason for applying: “Started new business” fits a channel that is already a business; “Banking purpose” is meant for an EIN requested for banking needs only.
  3. Employees expected in the next 12 months: enter zero if none.
  4. Principal activity: none of the listed industries describes video content, so choose “Other” and specify it.
  5. At the end, view, print and save the EIN assignment notice before you close the window. Banks and plan providers ask for it.

If the online tool won’t take your application, fax gets an EIN generally within 4 business days, and mail takes about 4 weeks.

One EIN covers everything you run as a sole proprietor

If the channel is one of several things you run, you don’t need an EIN for each. The SS-4 instructions say a sole proprietor needs only one EIN regardless of the number of businesses operated, including under trade names. The number changes when the structure does: a sole proprietorship that incorporates or enters a partnership needs a new EIN.

The creator taxes hub collects the rest of this series, and the YouTube ad revenue tax calculator estimates what to set aside from each AdSense payment.

Open AdSense, go to the tax info page, and confirm that the classification and name match your last tax return. If you have a sponsor deal or a solo 401(k) on the calendar, apply for the EIN on IRS.gov during the hours above and save the notice the same day.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my Social Security number for AdSense instead of an EIN?

Yes, for a US individual. Google's AdSense tax page asks US publishers for a US tax ID on a valid Form W-9 and names both an SSN and an EIN. The IRS W-9 says a sole proprietor with an EIN may enter either one. Pick the classification and name that match your income tax return.

How much does an EIN cost?

Nothing. The IRS says you never have to pay a fee for an EIN and warns about websites that charge for one. The online application issues the number at the end of the session if it is approved.

Do I need a new EIN if I form an LLC for my channel?

A new LLC is a new entity, and the W-9 rules change with it. A single-member LLC taxed by default still gives the owner's SSN, or the owner's EIN, on Form W-9, not the LLC's EIN. The SS-4 instructions say a sole proprietorship that incorporates or becomes a partnership needs a new EIN.

Does getting an EIN change how much tax I pay?

No. A sole proprietor's EIN is a second ID number for the same person. The channel's income still goes on your own Schedule C, and the EIN just goes on line D. Your tax bill depends on profit, not on which number sponsors and Google have on file.
